{"id":8787,"date":"2026-05-14T08:55:44","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T08:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lawsandlegals.com\/english\/?p=8787"},"modified":"2026-05-14T08:55:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T08:55:44","slug":"cji-surya-kant-forms-national-committee-to-modernise-courts-strengthen-digital-judicial-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lawsandlegals.com\/english\/cji-surya-kant-forms-national-committee-to-modernise-courts-strengthen-digital-judicial-infrastructure\/","title":{"rendered":"SC Unveils \u20b950,000 Crore Plan to Modernise Courts Across India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New Delh<\/strong>i: The Supreme Court has launched a major initiative aimed at modernising judicial infrastructure across the country and addressing long-standing problems such as inadequate court facilities, technological gaps and delays in disposal of cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the leadership of Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, the Supreme Court has constituted a \u201cJudicial Infrastructure Advisory Committee\u201d to prepare a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening courts nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee will assess the actual infrastructural needs of courts and is expected to propose a financial package of nearly \u20b940,000 crore to \u20b950,000 crore for the expansion and modernisation of the judicial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan will focus on improving court buildings, digital infrastructure, e-court systems, online judicial services and working conditions for judges and court staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a communication issued by Supreme Court Secretary General Bharat Parashar the committee has been tasked with identifying deficiencies in court infrastructure and recommending measures for long-term judicial reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal is expected to be placed before economist Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee will be chaired by Supreme Court judge Justice Aravind Kumar. Other members include Justice Debangsu Basak, Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan, along with senior government officials including the Director General of CPWD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Secretary General of the Supreme Court will serve as the Member Secretary of the committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The panel will examine issues such as shortage of courtrooms, inadequate facilities for judges and staff, poor seating arrangements for lawyers and litigants, outdated record management systems, weak internet connectivity and deficiencies in digital filing infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will also study ways to improve accessibility and convenience for citizens visiting courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A major focus of the initiative will be technology-driven judicial reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee has been directed to suggest measures for strengthening the e-courts project, expanding computerisation, improving online hearings and video conferencing facilities, and ensuring faster digital exchange of case data and records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal experts believe the move could significantly improve efficiency in courts and help reduce the massive backlog of pending cases across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At present, many courts continue to function with outdated infrastructure, staff shortages and limited technological resources, resulting in delays in justice delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court also intends to promote the development of modern court complexes equipped with secure digital systems, adequate courtrooms and citizen-friendly facilities. The aim is to transform courts into advanced judicial centres capable of handling future challenges efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee has been directed to submit its interim report by August 31, 2026.
