The court has now fixed May 26 for the next hearing in the matter.

The case was heard by a division bench comprising Justice Mahendra Kumar Goyal and Justice Anil Kumar Upman on contempt petitions filed by former MLA Sanyam Lodha and Giriraj Singh Devanda.

After detailed arguments in the matter, the bench decided to adjourn the hearing to a later date.

During the proceedings, the petitioners argued that the failure to conduct local body and panchayat elections within the prescribed time was depriving citizens of their constitutional rights. They contended that elected local governance is a constitutional mandate and delays in the election process were affecting democratic functioning at the grassroots level.

The High Court also reserved its order on an application submitted by the Rajasthan government during the hearing. The bench indicated that the contempt petition would be taken up further only after a decision is pronounced on the government’s application.

The contempt petition alleges that the Rajasthan government and the State Election Commission failed to comply with earlier directions issued by the High Court regarding the timely conduct of elections.

According to the petitioners, the authorities were deliberately delaying the election process despite clear judicial directions, amounting to wilful disobedience of court orders.

The controversy traces back to a major order passed by the Rajasthan High Court on November 14, 2025, while deciding 439 petitions related to local body and panchayat elections. The High Court had directed the state government to conduct elections across Rajasthan by April 15, 2026.

The court had also ordered the government to complete the delimitation process by December 31, 2025.

Subsequently, when the matter reached the Supreme Court of India, the apex court reportedly upheld the election timeline fixed by the High Court.

With the contempt petition now pending before the High Court, the issue has once again come under judicial scrutiny and is expected to intensify debate over delays in local elections, constitutional governance and administrative accountability in Rajasthan.

Jaipur: Rajasthan High Court on Monday postponed the hearing on a contempt petition filed over the delay in conducting panchayat and municipal body elections in the state.
