Jodhpur: Supreme Court Judge, Justice Sandeep Mehta, while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed seven-storey G-7 District Court building in Jodhpur, stressed that completed judicial infrastructure should be put to use without unnecessary delay.
Justice Mehta said the building had been ready for nearly a year but was still not being used. He said keeping a completed public building vacant for a long period amounts to wastage of public resources and could also lead to damage from moisture, termites and other factors.
He emphasised that litigants have a right to access better and modern court facilities.
He also suggested that the existing old District Court building could eventually be demolished after shifting the courts operating there to the new G-7 building. In its place, another seven-storey modern judicial building could be constructed, considering Jodhpur’s growing need for more courts.
Justice Mehta highlighted the historical importance of the judicial complex, noting that the High Court building there was inaugurated in 1924. He said the dignity of the historic complex should be maintained while replacing old and deteriorating structures with modern judicial infrastructure equipped with digitisation and advanced technology.
Recalling his own days at the complex, Justice Mehta said it had also been the workplace of Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Vijay Bishnoi. He remembered the time spent moving between the High Court and trial courts while handling cases.
He also appreciated the Rajasthan High Court Advocates Association and Rajasthan High Court Lawyers Association for jointly organising the inauguration ceremony and expressed hope that Jodhpur would continue to receive modern judicial infrastructure and other development initiatives
