CJI Surya Kant Administers Oath to Five New Supreme Court Judges; Court Strength Rises to 37

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Tuesday administered the oath of office to newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court, taking the apex court’s working strength to 37 judges, close to the revised strength of 38.

The five judges are:

Justice Sheel Nagu
Justice Shree Chandrashekhar
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva
Justice Arun palli
Justice V. Mohana

The appointment of these 5 new judges for the Supreme Court has been approved by the Centre following recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.

These recommendations were proposed in the Collegium meetings held on 22 May and 27 May.

With these appointments, the Supreme Court’s working strength has risen to 37, just one short of the revised strength of 38.

Justice Sheel Nagu was serving as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court before his appointment to the Supreme Court. He was originally associated with the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He also served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was serving as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court before his appointment to the Supreme Court. He was originally associated with the Jharkhand High Court.

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva was the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court. He began his judicial career at the Delhi High Court.

Justice Arun Palli served as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh before joining the Supreme Court. He was previously associated with the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Among the five appointments, the elevation of Justice V. Mohana directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court stands out as a significant development.

Her appointment is particularly noteworthy as she has became only the second woman after Justice Indu Malhotra (appointed in 2018) to be directly elevated from the bar to the apex court. The move is also being seen as an important step towards improving women’s representation in the higher judiciary.
