Six Parties, 150 Independents Collect Nomination Papers for 2026 Elections

Six Parties, 150 Independents Collect Nomination Papers for 2026 Elections:More than 160 individuals, including six representing political parties and 150 independents, have collected nomination forms ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections, the Electoral Commission confirms.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that over 160 individuals have so far picked nomination forms to contest in the 2026 general elections, including for the presidency, Members of Parliament, district chairpersons, city chairpersons, and councillors.

EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said six presidential nomination forms were collected on behalf of political parties, while the rest were picked by individuals intending to run as independents.

“This week marks the end of the second week of picking nominations. By the close of last week, over 160 people had picked presidential nomination forms, six of whom collected them on behalf of political parties,” Mucunguzi said.

He noted that under Uganda’s multiparty system, political parties must provide authorization letters from their Secretary Generals if representatives are sent to collect forms.

Both aspirants and their representatives must present national identity cards and proof of being registered voters.

Independent presidential aspirants must also provide proof of the minimum academic requirement of Advanced Level or its equivalent.

Once cleared, aspirants are required to collect at least 100 signatures of supporters from two-thirds of Uganda’s districts—a total of 98—before formal nomination.

Mucunguzi added that nomination forms for Members of Parliament are available for download on the EC website, while those for councillors and other local government positions can be obtained from district EC offices.

He revealed that at least two political parties were expected to collect presidential nomination forms on Monday, August 18, 2025, with details to be confirmed by the end of the day.

The EC urged aspirants and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully during the exercise.

“We ask all those who will be picking forms, whether from district headquarters or the EC offices in Kampala, to maintain law and order, follow traffic rules, and avoid disrupting normal business,” Mucunguzi said.

The nomination exercise will continue in the coming weeks as Uganda prepares for the 2026 polls.
