Law Commission of India Marks International Human Rights Day with Special Programme in New Delhi

Law Commission of India Marks International Human Rights Day, Highlights India’s Civilisational Human Rights Tradition

New Delhi, The Law Commission of India (LCI) commemorated International Human Rights Day with a special programme held on Friday afternoon, highlighting India’s deep-rooted civilisational commitment to human dignity and rights.

The event was organised around the theme “Human Rights as Continuity of Indian Tradition”, underscoring the country’s long-standing philosophical and cultural foundations of human rights.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, attended the programme as the Chief Guest.

The event began with the recitation of Vande Mataram, followed by a welcome address by Justice (Retd.) Dinesh Maheshwari, Chairperson of the Law Commission of India.

Justice Maheshwari emphasised the enduring relevance of India’s cultural and legal traditions in shaping contemporary human-rights discourse.

Addressing the gathering, Meghwal spoke on the evolution of human dignity and ethical values throughout India’s civilisational journey.

He drew inspiration from the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda, and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, noting that their ideas continue to inform India’s understanding of rights and responsibilities.

He also referred to Dr. B. R. Ambedkar as a pioneering champion of human rights in India, whose contributions laid the foundation for constitutional guarantees of dignity and equality.

The discussions during the programme highlighted that human rights in India are not merely modern legal constructs but are deeply embedded in the nation’s philosophical and cultural ethos. Concepts such as universal human dignity, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world as one family), fraternity, and duty were identified as having clear continuity with the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

As part of the observance, the Law Commission had organised an essay competition on December 10 on the theme “Ensuring Everyday Essentials: Public Services and Dignity for All”, open to its officers and officials.

Meghwal felicitated the winners and commended the thoughtful and insightful entries submitted by officers, legal consultants, and interns associated with the Commission. He also interacted with Commission officials, encouraging continued engagement with issues of public service delivery and human dignity.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. D. P. Verma, Member, LCI, followed by the recitation of Vande Mataram.

The Law Commission of India expressed its sincere appreciation to Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal for his gracious presence and for guiding the discussions with balance and insight, reinforcing India’s enduring commitment to human rights grounded in its rich civilisational heritage.
